In 2025, Slovenia marks the 40th anniversary of its organised response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic—a disease that has shaped countless life stories while driving remarkable progress in medicine, prevention, and social awareness. Experts emphasise that Slovenia has maintained one of the lowest epidemic rates globally since the very beginning.
The greatest challenge remains timely detection, as many patients receive their diagnosis too late. According to the National Institute of Public Health, approximately 1000 people in Slovenia live with HIV, and about one-tenth are unaware of their infection. Those undergoing treatment cannot transmit the virus further, and therapy provides them with a better quality of life and a longer life expectancy.
